About Maureen O'Connor

I’m a Canterbury-based genealogist with a background in education, community engagement, and practical problem-solving. I help individuals and families uncover their stories through roots genealogy, using historical records, DNA analysis, and lived experience.

My work is hands-on and ethical. I don’t chase myths or make promises I can’t keep. I focus on what’s real, what’s possible, and what’s useful—whether you’re just starting out or facing a brick wall.

I’m an active member of the Canterbury Genealogy Society, where I lead workshops, contribute to the newsletter, and support members in developing their research skills. I also design and deliver professional training programs through Origins Genealogy, including talks and hands-on sessions for community groups and societies.

My clients range from adoptees seeking biological family to researchers needing help with transcription, timelines, or document retrieval. I offer clear pricing, honest feedback, and a collaborative approach.

If you’re looking for practical support—not just theory—I’d be happy to work with you.

My Story

I began researching family history in 1997 after hearing an impossible story I couldn’t let go of. That single conversation led me into archives, cemeteries, and conversations with relatives I’d never met. Over time, what started as curiosity became a disciplined practice.

I hold a Diploma of Family History from the University of Tasmania, and I’ve spent decades refining my approach—combining traditional records with DNA analysis and lived experience. One particularly complex case led me to DNA test ten members of my extended family to prove a theory. That process taught me how powerful genetic tools can be when used ethically and carefully.

Today, I help others navigate their own stories—whether they’re just starting out, facing a brick wall, or trying to make sense of DNA results. My work is practical, respectful, and focused on real progress.
